During this process, each chromosome pairs up with its homologous partner, and at specific points along their DNA, a break occurs. This is known as a \ud835\uddf0\ud835\uddff\ud835\uddfc\ud835\ude00\ud835\ude00\ud835\uddf6\ud835\uddfb\ud835\uddf4 \ud835\uddfc\ud835\ude03\ud835\uddf2\ud835\uddff \ud835\uddf2\ud835\ude03\ud835\uddf2\ud835\uddfb\ud835\ude01. At these breakpoints, the chromatids exchange segments of genetic material.<br><br>As a result, some of the resulting pollen or ovule cells carry chromosomes with new combinations of genes\u2014combinations that differ from those of either parent. This \ud835\uddff\ud835\uddf2\ud835\ude00\ud835\uddf5\ud835\ude02\ud835\uddf3\ud835\uddf3\ud835\uddf9\ud835\uddf6\ud835\uddfb\ud835\uddf4 \ud835\uddfc\ud835\uddf3 \ud835\uddf4\ud835\uddf2\ud835\uddfb\ud835\uddf2\ud835\ude01\ud835\uddf6\ud835\uddf0 \ud835\uddfa\ud835\uddee\ud835\ude01\ud835\uddf2\ud835\uddff\ud835\uddf6\ud835\uddee\ud835\uddf9 is a key driver of genetic diversity and forms the biological basis of genetic mapping. Let&#8217;s see how.<br><br>When two genes (or a gene and a genetic marker) are physically close together on the same chromosome, they are said to be linked. But during crossing over, this linkage can be broken. This means that new combinations of genetic material can appear in the offspring\u2014combinations not seen in either parent.<br><br>\ud83d\udc49 For example, imagine a genetic marker (say, marker &#8220;\ud835\uddd4&#8221;) is physically close to a resistance gene &#8220;\ud835\udde5&#8221; in the parent plant. Most of the time, these two are inherited together. But in some individuals of the segregating population, due to recombination, we may observe the marker variant &#8220;\ud835\uddee&#8221; now associated with the resistance allele &#8220;\ud835\udde5&#8221;\u2014a recombinant has been formed.<br><br>\ud83e\uddec The frequency of these recombinants tells us how far apart the marker and the gene are on the chromosome. The closer they are, the less likely a crossing over will occur between them. If there&#8217;s 1 recombinant in every 100 offspring, we say the genetic distance is \ud835\udfed \ud835\uddf0\ud835\uddf2\ud835\uddfb\ud835\ude01\ud835\uddf6\ud835\udde0\ud835\uddfc\ud835\uddff\ud835\uddf4\ud835\uddee\ud835\uddfb (\ud835\uddf0\ud835\udde0).<br><br>\ud83d\udccd For now, the key concept is this: Crossing over breaks genetic linkage and creates new combinations of traits or marker-trait associations in the offspring of a cross.
